In 1997, when others said it couldn’t be done, Lamont Land took a different approach to Bridlewood Creek. The area located in South West Calgary was considered by many to be a 12-acre slough. The words “wasteland” and “undevelopable”, were often used to describe what Lamont Land considered to be a worthwhile challenge.
Instead of bringing in heavy machinery and filling in the “problem”, Lamont Land enhanced it. By constructing an ample water supply from storm rains and preserving the area as a natural habitat for birds, frogs, and many other native species – it became a protected natural wetland. The first project of its kind in Calgary – it brought life and awareness to the responsibility that developers have regarding environmental stewardship.
Today in Bridlewood Creek, there are 225 homes nestled around a fully integrated urban wetland amenity. Designed and developed within the City’s boundaries, it acts as both a stormwater retention and management facility, and a natural park area providing wildlife habitat and that residents can appreciate.
In 1998, following the success and vision for Bridlewood Creek – Lamont introduced the community of Aspen Creek in Strathmore. Instead of removing indigenous trees – normally considered a nuisance when clearing land for development – Lamont used the stands of native Aspens as inspiration for creating a community with a intimate woodland backdrop. The stands of trees were preserved and Aspen Creek was built around them.
Aspen Creek is a unique 240 lot community designed to blend harmoniously with the natural environment. The community’s forested woodland setting, and playgrounds and pathways, act as an inspiring backdrop to character architecture. It retains the charm of older communities with established trees but offers residents the conveniences and comforts of a new community to enrich their lifestyle.
It was 1994 and Millrise Meadows was Lamont’s first subdivision. Many of the progressive land development practices that Lamont is well known for were first implemented in this community. The original zoning for this community was for industrial usage, but Lamont Land campaigned passionately for changing the usage to residential. Why? Lamont Land understood that future transportation planning near the community – the light rail transit system – would make Millrise Meadows a convenient place to live for commuting homeowners.
Lamont also understood that the community’s proximity to Fish Creek Park – and its recreational opportunities – made it an ideal location for new homes that provided residents with access to natural amenities they could enjoy. In 1994 this was considered “out-of-the-box thinking”. Today, over 87 families call Millrise Meadows home and enjoy the benefits and a vision pioneered by Lamont Land in the early years.
Somerset Cove - Commercial
A small commercial parcel (15,400 square feet) serving as a neighbourhood shopping centre, across from Lamont’s residential development of Bridlewood Creek. The centre is fully leased; tenants include a private school, a popular pizza restaurant, a dentist, a veterinarian, a tailor/dry cleaner, a specialty food and gift store, and a convenience store with a gas bar. The centre’s proximity to the Bridlewood Creek Wetlands required great sensitivity and care in development, which was completed to the highest environmental standards with state-of-the-art equipment.
